It is with profound sadness and deep respect that we share this death obituary honoring the life and service of Lieutenant Commander Caroline Frances Oakes, MBE, RN, a remarkable and compassionate officer of the Royal Navy, who passed away at the age of 37 following a sudden heart attack while on holiday in Bali on February 13.

Lieutenant Commander Caroline Oakes, MBE
Lt Cdr Oakes was a cherished former cadet of NI Wing, having begun her journey with 2241 and 825 (Bangor) Squadron. From those early days, her dedication, discipline, and natural leadership were evident. At just 19, she joined the Royal Navy as Officer Aircrew, embarking on an extraordinary career that would leave a lasting legacy.
An accomplished observer, Caroline trained at Britannia Royal Naval College before advancing through flying training at RNAS Culdrose and 750 NAS. She earned her Observer Wings in June 2010 and served with distinction on the Sea King ASaC.7, including operational tours in Afghanistan under Operation HERRICK, as well as deployments across the Mediterranean and Middle East. Her contributions extended beyond aviation, as she later played a vital role in integrating the ScanEagle system into service, demonstrating adaptability and innovation.
Colleagues remember her as “compassionate and patient,” qualities she exemplified during her role in a Service Inquiry, where her professionalism and humanity ensured dignity for all involved. Her excellence was formally recognized in the 2026 New Year Honours List with the award of an MBE.
Beyond her uniform, Caroline was a devoted daughter to Roma, a much-loved sister to Jen, Mark, Katrina, and Mark, and a cherished aunt and loyal friend. Her warmth, strength, and generosity touched countless lives.
A service of thanksgiving was held at Wellington Presbyterian Church, followed by a private cremation, both conducted with full military honours—a testament to her service and sacrifice.
As we say “Blue Skies, Caroline,” we extend our deepest condolences to her family, friends, colleagues, and all who knew her. Though her passing leaves an irreplaceable void, her legacy of courage, kindness, and service will continue to inspire generations.
May she rest in eternal peace.
