KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Matt Hinkin, longtime chief meteorologist at WATE and a trusted presence on television screens across East Tennessee for more than three decades, passed away on Monday afternoon at the age of 62.
Hinkin joined WATE in 1990 after beginning his broadcasting career at stations in Missouri and Kansas. Over the course of 31 years, he became a familiar and reassuring voice, guiding viewers through some of the region’s most significant weather events, including the historic Blizzard of 1993 and the devastating Gatlinburg wildfires. His dedication to keeping the community informed earned him deep respect and admiration.
Colleague and anchor Lori Tucker, who worked alongside Hinkin for many years, shared the news during a noon broadcast, remembering his unique ability to connect with people. “Matt just had a way about him that drew people to him,” she said, reflecting the sentiment of countless viewers who welcomed him into their homes daily.
Hinkin retired in 2021 following a diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease, a challenge he faced with remarkable courage. Rather than retreating from the public eye, he chose to share his journey openly, raising awareness and offering support to others living with the condition. Even through personal hardships, including the loss of his wife, Deb, in 2020, he remained an advocate and a source of encouragement.
A devout Christian, Hinkin was known for his kindness, humility, and selfless spirit. His legacy extends far beyond broadcasting, living on in the lives he touched and the community he served.
He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.
